Berlin, December 23, 2025 – Berlin’s public transport services will undergo adjustments during the Christmas holidays, with the Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (BVG) announcing a modified timetable for buses, trams, and U-Bahn lines. The changes aim to accommodate holiday travel patterns while ensuring continued mobility for residents and visitors.
Christmas Eve: Saturday Timetable in Effect
On Christmas Eve, December 24, BVG services will operate according to a Saturday timetable. This includes buses, trams, and U-Bahn trains. A notable adjustment for the U-Bahn is an increased frequency between 8:00 AM and 3:30 PM, with trains running every five minutes. This measure is expected to manage the anticipated higher passenger volumes during the daytime hours leading up to the evening festivities.
“According to the BVG, buses, trams and underground trains will run according to the Saturday timetable on Christmas Eve,” stated the transport company in its announcement. This ensures a consistent level of service that passengers are accustomed to on weekends, providing ample opportunity for last-minute shopping and family visits.
Christmas Day and Boxing Day: Sunday Schedule Applies
For Christmas Day, December 25, and Boxing Day, December 26, all three modes of transport – buses, trams, and U-Bahn – will follow a Sunday timetable. This means a reduced frequency compared to weekdays, aligning with typical holiday service levels. Passengers are advised to plan their journeys accordingly, taking into account the slightly longer waiting times that may occur on these days.
“On Christmas Day and Boxing Day, all three modes of transport will operate according to the Sunday timetable,” the BVG confirmed. This standard holiday scheduling is a common practice to match the generally lower demand for public transport on these public holidays.
Continuous Night Service for U-Bahn Lines
A significant provision for the festive period is the implementation of a continuous night service on most U-Bahn lines. “On the nights of 23/24 December to 27/28 December, all underground lines (except the U4) will operate a continuous night service,” the transport company announced. This extended service will be particularly beneficial for those celebrating late into the night, offering a reliable means of transport during the early morning hours.
The U4 line is the only exception to this continuous night service. Passengers planning to use U-Bahn services during these late-night periods are encouraged to check the BVG’s official channels for specific timings and any potential service updates.
Ensuring Mobility During the Holidays
These adjustments reflect BVG’s commitment to providing essential public transport services throughout the Christmas period, balancing the need for efficiency with the fluctuating demands of holiday travel. Passengers are encouraged to consult the BVG website or app for real-time information and personalized travel planning to ensure a smooth journey during the festive season.
